Mary-Jane Molina “Marie” Malvar (April 1, 1965 – April 30, 1983) was a young woman who was murdered by Gary Ridgway in SeaTac or Auburn, Washington, on April 30, 1983. She was Ridgway’s twenty-fifth known murder victim.
Background
Marie was born on April 1, 1965, in Manila, the Philippines. At some point in her life, her family moved to the United States. Marie ended up in Washington and became involved in sex work.
Disappearance
Marie was last seen by her boyfriend along Pacific Highway South, climbing into a truck. He became suspicious of this, so he got in his vehicle and tried following it but couldn’t find it.
Aftermath
Four days after her disappearance, Marie’s boyfriend contacted police, saying he found the truck he tried following parked in front of a house. The house belonged to a man named Gary Ridgway. Police interviewed Ridgway, but he claimed he had nothing to do with Marie’s disappearance.
Marie was immediately suspected of being a victim of the Green River Killer, causing her to be added to the list of believed victims very soon after she disappeared.
Apprehension of suspect
On November 30, 2001, police arrested Gary Ridgway, the man whose truck Marie was seen getting into, for the murders of four Green River victims. In 2003, Ridgway confessed to most of the other murders attributed to him, including Marie’s. When confessing to Marie’s murder, he claimed he leaned on a fence while being questioned by police to hide scratch marks Marie left on him while fighting for her life.
Discovery of remains
By the time Ridgway confessed to the Green River killings, Marie’s remains hadn’t been recovered yet, meaning she was still considered a missing person. When asked the location of the other victim’s remains, Ridgway led police to a ravine in Auburn, Washington, where a skull was discovered. Dental records confirmed it belonged to Marie.
Gary Ridgway was convicted of the murders of forty-nine women, including Marie, and is serving a life sentence.
