Marcia Faye Chapman (July 9, 1951 – August 1, 1982) was a young woman who was murdered by Gary Ridgway in SeaTac, Washington, on August 1, 1982. She was Ridgway’s fourth known murder victim.
Background
Marcia was born in Arizona on July 9, 1951. At some point in her life, she moved to Washington. She was a single mother with three children. She couldn’t provide for her children with a traditional job, so she turned to being a sex worker.
Marcia was once approached by a man who offered to be her pimp for protection. She denied his offer as she wanted the most money possible to care for her children. A detective who knew Marcia before her murder described her as a nice person with a kind heart.
Disappearance
Marcia was last seen leaving her apartment on August 1, 1982. Her apartment was quite close to Pacific Highway South. It’s unknown what happened to her afterward.
Discovery
Marcia was identified as being one of three bodies pulled from the Green River on August 15, 1982, with the other victims being Cynthia Hinds and Opal Mills. All three women were either nude or partially clothed. All three women were also raped, as semen was found in their bodies.
Aftermath
The bodies of Wendy Coffield and Debra Bonner were pulled from the river on previous days. All five women were believed to have been killed by the same person, who was dubbed the “Green River Killer.”
The killer’s second known murder victim, Gisele Lovvorn, was discovered in SeaTac, Washington, in September 1982, meaning the killer had murdered at least six women at the time of the discovery of Opal, Cynthia, and Marcia.
In 2001, the semen collected from the bodies of Marcia, Opal, and Cynthia matched a man named Gary Ridgway. He was convicted of all three of the murders and later confessed to the murders of forty-six other women.
