In October 2021, Dustin Parra was indicted for second-degree murder and for tampering with evidence.

In March 2023, Dustin entered a nolo contendere plea to negligent homicide.
As part of the proceeding, he acknowledged facts concerning the circumstances surrounding Megan’s death. According to the account presented in the case, the marriage had been troubled, the couple argued that morning, and Dustin was holding a pistol when it discharged during a struggle, striking Megan.
He also admitted leaving the residence before returning after Steve contacted him.
Dustin was sentenced to five years in prison, with the possibility that any remaining portion could be served under parole if he was released early.
The resolution brought a legal conclusion to a case that had remained a source of anguish for Megan’s family for years.
But it did not erase the questions surrounding her death.
A Family Still Living With the Loss
Megan’s children remained with Dustin following her death. In April 2023, her parents, Steve and Missy Ducote, were awarded full custody of their grandchildren.
