On the night of August 6, 1989, 23-year-old Angela Jean Mihm Monhollen was on her way to work at a nursing home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was scheduled to begin her late shift at 11 p.m., but she never arrived.
Angela had left her home on North St. Louis Avenue at around 10:30 that night. While traveling on the Gilcrease Expressway near Harvard Avenue, her truck ran out of gas. Investigators later learned that Angela had apparently tried to hitchhike after becoming stranded.
The following day, August 7, Angela was reported missing. During the investigation, authorities found her purse lying along the roadway several miles from where her truck had been abandoned.
For a week, there was no sign of Angela.
Then, on the morning of August 14, a city employee made a disturbing discovery. At approximately 7:30 a.m., partially decomposed human remains were found in a ditch surrounded by high grass along Yale Avenue near 36th Street. The location was only about three miles from where Angela’s truck had been left.
The remains were identified as Angela through forensic examination and distinctive tattoos. Her purse was also located just two blocks from where her body was discovered.
Investigators believed Angela may have been strangled, although her exact cause of death was never determined.
Angela was the youngest of seven children and had been born in Indiana before eventually moving to Tulsa. She was a mother of four. Although she had married young and was no longer living with her husband, she was in a relationship with someone else at the time of her death.
